If there’s one thing Kentucky is famous for, it’s the Kentucky Derby, along with bourbon. This annual horse race has been held in Louisville since 1875. According to the old tradition, the derby takes place on the first Saturday in May and attracts spectators from all over the world. In 2007, Queen Elizabeth II even visited, making her childhood dream come true. Kentucky loves its thoroughbreds, who for example even get an official funeral. Racehorses from Kentucky are in great demand around the world and have a corresponding price, which is why the thoroughbred horse business is an important industry. Those who love horses shouldn’t miss the spectacular derby.
Kentucky Derby Museum
Since the “Kentucky Derby” has become an integral part of Louisville and simply belongs to Kentucky, a museum has been dedicated to the world’s most popular horse gallop race. The museum is unlike any other that one may have experienced before. It is right next to the entrance to the legendary Churchill Downs circuit, where the race takes place. In its galleries and exhibitions, the museum offers something for everyone. There is, for example, a movie theater here. You learn interesting things about the art of horse shoeing, see glamorous dresses and hats of the fine ladies and find out which people shaped the “Kentucky Derby” and the American horse races. Louisville Slugger Museum
Located in downtown Louisville, the Louisville Slugger Museum shows the history of the Louisville Slugger baseball bat and the history of baseball in the area. The Louisville Slugger baseball bats are a famous brand made by the Hillerich & Bradsby company. Historical baseball bats and other baseball artefacts can be seen. However, the main attraction of the museum is in front of the building; this is the largest baseball bat in the world. The “Big Bat” is around 36 m high and weighs almost 30,000 kg.
MainStrasse Village
If visitors want to experience a lot, head to MainStrasse Village in Covington. This historic village is located in an old German area in Covington and consists of many shops, restaurants and houses in Victorian and Italianate styles. The village has been reconstructed and rebuilt as it looked many years ago and offers visitors a glimpse into history. The many Federal and Queen Anne style houses, which are decorated with many intricate details, are particularly charming. The heart of the “MainStrasse Village”, however, is the “Carroll Chimes Bell Tower”. Its carillon is particularly impressive. In the center of the picturesque village, there is also a fountain, the Goose Girl Fountain, which is made entirely of bronze.
