Swainsboro

The small town of Swainsboro is located in Emanuel County and is also its administrative seat. It was founded in 1822 and was named after the well-known Senator Stephen Swain. Bartow

Bartow is a village in Jefferson County. The exact founding date of the small town is not known, but the beginnings go back to the early 19th century. It was first known as “Woods Fort”, but a few years later it was given its current name, which can be traced back to Colonel Francis S. Bartow. Even if the historic Bartow is very small, it is still unique because the entire place has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Every single building is part of the Historic District. A tour of the village should begin at the small “Heritage Park”. From there you get to the “Stop # 11 Depot” and the business district, where some wooden buildings with brick details, which were built between 1890 and 1920, have been preserved. Along Church Street are the “Bartow Methodist Church” from 1880 and the modern Gothic “Bartow Baptist Church” from 1926. Another historical site is the picturesque “Bartow Cemetery” which dates back to 1850. Also on Church Street is the Evans Minor House and many other buildings that offer a mix between the Antebellum, Greek Revival and Victorian architectural styles.

Little White House Historic Site

The Little White House, also known as Roosevelt’s Little White House Historic Site, is located in the Warm Springs Historic District in Warm Springs. The governor of New York, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, once came to Warm Springs for health reasons, but since he liked it so much, he built a house which was completed in 1932. Roosevelt lived in this house until his death and it was finally opened to the public in 1948. Today it is a museum in which the original furnishings and interesting information about Franklin D. Roosevelt are exhibited, as well as the famous “Unfinished Portrait” Roosevelt. This was drawn by the artist Elizabeth Shournatoff when he died.

Margaret Mitchell House & Museum

The “Margaret Mitchell House & Museum” is located in Atlanta, the former home of Margaret Mitchell. She is the author of the world famous novel “Gone with the Wind”. The house was built in 1899 in the Tudor Revival style. Today it is a historical house museum with a visitor center and part of the house is specially dedicated to the film adaptation of your novel. There are guided tours of the museum, where you can learn interesting information about Margaret Mitchell’s life in Georgia.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site

Atlanta is home to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, which was the home of the famous civil rights activist Martin Luther King. The house was placed under a preservation order and is open to visitors every day. The memorial in the Sweet Aburn Historic District also includes the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King and his father preached, and a museum about the American civil rights movement.
