The area of Colorado, explored by Spaniards in the 16th century, was disputed between Spain and France in the 17th and 18th centuries. The USA acquired the eastern part in 1803 with the purchase of Louisiana from France, and the western part from Mexico in 1848 with the Peace of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Gold discoveries (1858) triggered a gold rush in 1859. Organized as an independent territory since 1861, Colorado became the 38th state on August 1, 1876.
