Southwest South Carolina
The Southwest region is known as South Carolina’s equestrian capital. This region is a real heaven for both the rider and the horses. The region is also known for its mild winter, the freshly scented autumn and unsurpassable blooming gardens in spring. Known as a winter sports destination for some of America’s wealthiest families, it wasn’t uncommon for celebrities like the Goodyears, Whitneys, Astors, and Vanderbilts to have homes here. Magnificent mansions, old streets, beautiful gardens and a restored inn from the 19th century are reminiscent of the city’s golden era as a retreat for fine society.
Barnwell
The small town of Barnwell is the county seat of Barnwell County and was named after the Irishman John Barnwell. The Edisto River runs on the northern border and the Savannah River separates the city from Georgia on the southeastern border. Barnwell and the surrounding area offer a variety of things to do, including fishing, hunting, swimming and boating. In addition, Barnwell also offers some sights and landmarks. The latter include the “Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles” and the rectory, as well as the “Bethlehem Baptist Church” and the “Old Presbyterian Church”, all of which have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. Aiken
The small town of Aiken is located in the eponymous Aiken County and is its county seat. The history and foundation of Aiken goes back to 1835 and it got its name from William Aiken, who was a founder of the Charleston Railway Company. After the end of the Civil War, Aiken was especially popular as a resort and summer residence with the affluent Charleston society. Today Aiken is known as a university town and as the center of thoroughbred breeding. Since the breeding of thoroughbreds has a long tradition, a polo tournament is still held every Saturday, as was the custom in 1882. Since South Carolina has very few wineries, the nearby Aikens winery is considered a true rarity.
North Augusta
The city of North Augusta is located in Aiken County of South Carolina on the north bank of the Savannah River. The area on which today’s North Augusta is located was settled over 300 years ago. The English then established a trading post called Savannah Town, while North Augusta was not established until the beginning of the 20th century. The city is best known for its many historic houses including Rosemary Hall and Lookaway Hall. Other attractions here include Bell Farms Strawberry Patch, Mount Vintage Plantation Golf & Athletic Club, and River Golf Club.
