Mobile
Mobile [mə ʊ bi ː l], city in Alabama, USA, at the mouth of the Mobile River in Mobile Bay of the Gulf of Mexico, 193,500 residents; catholic archbishop’s seat; University of South Alabama (founded 1963), University of Mobile (founded 1961); Shipbuilding, aluminum extraction, petroleum refining, chemical, paper, clothing industries; River and sea port; Airport.
A fort was built by French settlers in 1702 about 40 km north of today’s city and in 1711 the city that served as the capital of Louisiana until 1720 at its current location. During the Civil War, Mobile was one of the main Confederate ports. In the Battle of Mobile Bay (August 1864), the last naval battle of the Civil War, a Union fleet under Admiral David G. Farragut broke through the bay, which was heavily protected by forts, mines and barriers, and destroyed the ships of the Confederation. The city could only be taken by Union troops on April 12, 1865.

Montgomery Zoo
The “Montgomery Zoo” was founded in 1935 under the name “Oak Park Zoo”. After a temporary closure, the zoo reopened its doors in 1974. It is home to more than 150 different species with more than 500 animals. You can see bison, lion tamarins, tigers, gazelles, red giant kangaroos and much more. The zoo is divided into different themed areas, which were named after the major continents and show the typical animal species.
Oak Mountain State Park
The “Oak Mountain State Park” is the largest nature reserve in the state of Alabama. The state park extends over 4020 hectares between the Double Oak Mountains and Little Oak Ridge. The creation of the park can be traced back to 1927. The beautiful area offers a variety of leisure activities. It is particularly popular because of its hiking opportunities, the well-developed mountain bike trails and excellent golf courses, but also because of the great swimming opportunities. You can also fish, go boating and, above all, experience and explore the wilderness of Alabama. Events that take place annually provide additional variety.
Old Alabama Town
The Old Alabama Town museum village is located in the historic city center of Montgomery. The city, which has been restored with great attention to detail, was founded in 1967. In the years that followed, more than 50 historical buildings were finally restored and now belong to the museum complex. Here, visitors get an insight into life in Alabama in the 19th century.
Old City Hall
The former City Hall of Mobile, the “Old City Hall”, is also known as the “Southern Market”. The town hall in the classical style was built between 1855 and 1857 and served as a market for a while. Today the city museum Mobiles is housed in this building, which shows the 300 year old history of the city in an impressive exhibition.
