Seattle [s ɪ AETL], city in the state of Washington, USA, on the hilly isthmus between the Pugetsund and Lake Washington, with 609,000 residents, is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest (1950: 612,000 2000: 564,000 residents), of which (2010) 69.5% white, 13.8% Asian and 7.9% black; the metropolitan area (with Tacoma) has 3.44 million residents;Seat of a Catholic Archbishop and a Methodist Bishop; University of Washington (founded 1861) and two other universities (both founded 1891), art galleries and museums. Seattle is an important industrial center (especially aerospace [until 2001 seat of Boeing Co., today only production], iron and steel, electrical industry, wood processing). Large corporate headquarters (Amazon.com Inc., Starbucks Corp.). The port, which is important for traffic with Asia and Alaska, is one of the largest container handling ports in the world; the rail ferries between Seattle and Whittier, Alaska, 2,620 km away, take seven days to travel.
The historic city center is Pioneer Square with Victorian brick buildings and an 18 m tall totem pole. To the north of it extends the Central Business District (Downtown) with City Hall and numerous skyscrapers (especially offices, banks, hotels); Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates built the postmodernist Seattle Art Museum here (1984–91); Another new museum building is the Deconstructivist Experience Music Project – Rock ‘n’ Roll Museum by F. O. Gehry (1997–2000); R. Koolhaas designed the Public Library (1999-2004). At the »Waterfront«, the Alaskan Way, laid on stilts, leads to the Seattle Center in the northwest (site of the 1962 World’s Fair with the city’s landmark, the »Space Needle«, a 185 m high observation tower, and the Pacific Science Center, 1962, from Yamasaki Minoru). In 2003, the new opera house, designed by LMN Architects, was opened.
Founded in 1851 by white settlers, named after Seattle Indian chief; through the railway connection to the east, Seattle developed into an important trading and supply center for Alaska after gold was found in the Yukon and Alaska. With the expansion of the port, Seattle gained great importance as an international transshipment point, especially after the completion of the Panama Canal.
