Today the museum houses an amazing collection of more than 16,000 works of art. You can see Asian and African works of art, European and American art up to 1900, modern and contemporary art, as well as drawings, photographs, prints and traditional southern porcelain.

Alamance Battleground State Historic Site

The “Alamance Battleground” is a historic North Carolina site commemorating the Battle of Alamance. The battlefield is located south of Burlington in the Alamance and dates back to 1771. The State Historic Site was built to preserve parts of the battlefield and to provide an insight into the life of settlers in northern North Carolina in the 1770’s. In the visitor center you can also find books and documents and many other relics from this era. Also part of the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site is the John Allen House, where visitors can take guided tours. Ava Gardner Museum

The Ava Gardner Museum is located in historic downtown Smithfield and has an extensive collection of artifacts from the life of Ava Gardner. The original collection is from 1941 from her fan Tom Banks. He bought the house where Ava Gardner lived during her childhood in the 1980’s and used it as a museum. In order to cope with the flow of visitors and to be able to expand the collection of memorabilia, the museum moved to a larger building in 2000.

In the southwest of North Carolina is the city of Charlotte, which with a total area of 629 km² and around 860,000 residents is also the largest city in the state.

It was founded in 1768 and owes its name to Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the German wife of the then English King Georg III, which earned her the nickname Queen City. In addition, the city is also called the Green City because of its many green spaces.

Economically, Charlotte is one of the most important financial centers in the USA today. The largest skyscraper in North Carolina is also located here, along with the headquarters of Bank of America.

Visitors to the city will find numerous interesting facilities here, including a large number of historical buildings and museums. For example, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Discovery Place Science or the Billy Graham Library can be visited. The US National Whitewater Center and Carowinds Amusement Park are also particularly popular.
