New Jersey is one of the leading industrial nations in the USA with an extremely diverse production line, including: Electronics and clothing industry, steel production, shipbuilding and mechanical engineering, telecommunications and biotechnology. The region around the university city of Princeton has developed into an important high-tech location. Pipelines from Texas and Oklahoma end in Bayonne, and large refineries are in Linden and Carteret. Major transportation hub on the east coast: Newark Airport; Ports of Port Newark and Port Elizabeth, Garden State Highway and New Jersey Turnpike, several bridges and tunnels to New York City. The highly developed agriculture is geared towards the supply of the big cities (vegetables, fruit, poultry, milk). Agricultural land productivity is greater in New Jersey than in any other state. The elongated, dune-covered spit coast (especially around Atlantic City) is a magnet for major tourism. New Jersey has a leading position in research in the United States (Research Institutes of the Industry, Institute for Advanced Study).
History
As part of New Netherlands after 1624, the area between Hudson and Delaware was after the English takeover (1664) from the Duke of York (later James II of England) to Lord John Berkeley († 1678) and Sir George Carteret (* 1610, † 1680) handed over as owner colony and divided in 1676: West Jersey, by W. Penni.a. bought, was v. a. settled by Quakers, East Jersey from New England and Scotland. Even after the political unification (1702) as a British crown colony, which was co-administered by the governor of New York until 1738, the parts retained their character. Independent in 1776, New Jersey played a key role in the War of Independence, both strategically and later in terms of transport policy, between New York and Pennsylvania. It ratified the Federal Constitution on December 18, 1787 as the third state of the Union. New Jersey’s mild corporate law attracted numerous large corporations in the 19th century and was in place before the reforms under W. Wilson as one of the most corrupt states. The strong immigration, especially of blacks, to the large industrial districts from around 1900 led to social tensions.
