History
The region, visited by the Spaniards under H. de Soto in 1541 and reached in 1673 by the French Louis Jolliet (* 1645, † 1700) and J. Marquette, became part of the Louisiana colony after it was taken over for France by R. R. de La Salle (1682) . In 1735 the first permanent settlement was Sainte Genevieve, founded by the French, and Saint Louis in 1764. Missouri came to Spain in 1762 and to the United States in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase (Louisiana). In 1805 it was organized as the Territory of Louisiana, in 1812 as the Territory of Missouri and – after the cession of Arkansas (1819) – was incorporated into the Union as the 24th state on August 10, 1821. Since despite their approval (Missouri Compromise) Slavery did not really gain a foothold here, Missouri, which suffered heavy fighting during the Civil War, remained – albeit reluctantly – with the Union, although volunteers also fought on the side of the Confederate.
