The area of today’s North Dakota belonged to the French colony Louisiana and came into possession of the USA through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In 1861 it was merged with other parts of the Louisiana Purchase and the area ceded by British Canada in 1818 in the Dakota Territory and – after being separated from South Dakota – on November 2, 1889, it became the 39th state in the Union.
