Jersey City

Jersey City [ d ʒ ə ː zi s ɪ ti], city in New Jersey, USA, on the Hudson River across from New York’s District Manhattan, 239,100 residents; Jersey City State College, Saint Peter’s Catholic College, museums; Petroleum refineries, chemical, electrotechnical, petrochemical, textile and cosmetic industries; Part of New York Harbor; Connected to Manhattan by tunnel and subway.

Jersey City was founded around 1630 as a Dutch trading post (Paulus Hook, current name from 1836); Permanently settled since around 1650, British since 1664.

Paterson

Paterson [ pætəsn], an industrial city in New Jersey, USA, northwest of New York 150 800 residents; catholic bishopric; Textile factories, machine and engine construction, chemical and electronic industry.

Paterson was founded shortly after the War of Independence because of the water power (waterfalls) available as a settlement with several textile factories and named after William Paterson (* 1719, † 1806), one of the authors of the American constitution. The city is the setting for the film »Paterson« (2016) by J. Jarmusch.

The major airport Newark Liberty International (for New York) is partly in the city area.

Elizabeth emerged from 1664 as one of the oldest settlements in New Jersey. 1668–82 it was the center of the New Jersey colonial area. In 1740 Elizabeth was granted town rights as a borough, and in 1855 as a city.
