Saint Louis (Missouri)

Saint Louis [snt l ʊ ɪ s], city in Missouri, USA, on the right bank of the Mississippi River, 16 km below the mouth of the Missouri, (2010) 319 000 (1950 857 000), of which 43.9% White and 49.2% black.

The metropolitan area has 2.79 million residents; catholic archbishop’s seat; Saint Louis University (founded 1818), branch of the University of Missouri, Washington University (founded 1857), Webster University (founded 1915), numerous colleges and museums; Financial center; Commercial (cattle, grain, wool, wood) and industrial city with aircraft (military aircraft), vehicle and mechanical engineering, chemical, electronics and food industries. The »Gateway Arch« (1963–65, a steel arch, 192 m high, designed by Eero Saarinen) reminds us of Saint Louis as the starting point for settlement in the west. The Old Cathedral was built in 1831–34; Old Courthouse (1839 ff.); Wainwright Building by L. H. Sullivan (1890-91); the fountain “Wedding of the waters” (1930) by C. Milles symbolizes the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers; in the Palace of Art, built by C. Gilbert for the 1904 World’s Fair, the Saint Louis Art Museum (sculptures, paintings and applied arts); in the Saint Louis’ Grand Center the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts (collection of modern art), a new building by T. Andō committed to the minimalist architectural language(Opened in 2001). The Laumeier International Sculpture Park, founded in 1976, is one of the most important open-air museums in the USA. In the botanical garden (laid out in 1859), among others. a greenhouse by R. B. Fuller (“Climatron”, 1960).

History

Founded in 1764 as a French trading post, named after the French King Louis IX, the saint; came as a result of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 to the USA, 1805 capital of the Louisiana Territory, from 1812 of the Missouri Territory. Because of its location, thanks to steam navigation and railroading (1863), Saint Louis became the gateway to the development and settlement of the American West (“Gateway to the West”); after 1848 strong German immigration. As trade and industry expanded, Saint Louis became the third largest city in the United States around 1870.
