Annapolis

Annapolis [ə næpəl ɪ s], capital of the State of Maryland, USA, on the west coast of the Chesapeake Bay, 39 400 residents; Part of the Baltimore – Columbia – Towson Metropolitan Area; Naval Academy (founded in 1845), St. John’s College; Marina, commercial center.

Maryland State House, the seat of parliament for the state, was built in the Georgian style in 1772–97.

Founded in 1649 by Puritans from Virginia, Annapolis was the meeting place of the American Congress from November 1783 to June 1784.

Chesapeake Bay

Chesapeake Bay [ t ʃ esəpi ː k be ɪ ], Chesapeake Bay, Bay of the Atlantic Ocean in the eastern coastal plain of the United States (Maryland and Virginia), highly structured, 320 km long, up to 40 m deep, emerged from the drowned lower reaches of the Susquehanna River and its tributaries; Road bridge (7 km) in the northern part near Annapolis (since 1952); the southern part has been crossed (since 1964) by a system (a total of 28 km) of bridges and, in order not to impair shipping, two tunnels (each almost 2 km long), for whose entrances and exits four artificial islands were created. From the main port, Baltimore, has shipping through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canala shorter connection to the Atlantic Ocean to Delaware Bay; Major fish and shrimp fishing and oyster farming in Chesapeake Bay; Tourist area.
