History

The Maine coastal region explored in 1497 by G. and S. Caboto. The area inhabited by Indians of the Algonquin language family was long disputed between France and Great Britain (first French settlers 1604, first English 1607); Since 1622 it became the owner’s colony in the possession of Sir Fernando Gorges (* around 1566, † 1647), permanently settled since the late 1830s. After the annexation (1677) to Massachusetts, which was confirmed in the new charter for Massachusetts in 1691, the colony developed rapidly through fur trade, logging, shipbuilding and fishing despite ongoing fighting with the Algonquin, which was supported by the French. In connection with the Missouri Compromise (1820), Maine was separated from Massachusetts and on March 15, 1820, became the 23rd state into the Union. The border dispute with Canada that had existed since the end of the War of Independence was settled in 1842 by the “Webster-Ashburton Treaty”. In 1851, Maine passed the first Maine Law in the United States.
