Port Hudson State Historic Site
Port Hudson State Historic Site is located on the Mississippi River near Port Hudson. The longest siege during the American Civil War once took place at this place where the present memorial is located. Part of the historical square is also a museum with exhibits about the siege, artillery and fortifications. The Port Hudson State Historic Site has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
Poverty Point National Monument
The archaeological site “Poverty Point” is located in northeast Louisiana near Epps. The area is about 160 hectares and shows artificial mounds and other earth structures such as so-called rings, an Indian culture. Numerous artifacts have been found at the excavation site, including grave sticks, hand axes, spear throwers, scrapers, various types of blades, jewelry and pendants. “Poverty Point” has been designated a National Historic Landmark, State Historic Site and most recently a National Monument and attracts thousands of visitors annually. A museum in the visitor center offers background information and daily guided tours.
Rebel State Historic Site
The Rebel State Historic Site is located near Marthaville in Natchitoches Parish. The historic site is intended to commemorate the history and culture of northwest Louisiana. Today there is also an amphitheater and a stage on which live music is regularly performed on the 19 hectare site. There is also a pavilion and the Louisiana Country Music Museum on the premises. The museum displays memorabilia from Louisiana residents who made the country famous through country music and gospel singing.
Sabine Pass Light
The “Sabine Pass Light” is a historic lighthouse in Cameron Parish which is located on the banks of the Sabine River. The lighthouse was built and commissioned in 1856, but was deactivated again in 1952. The quay, the guard’s house, and a wooden outbuilding were all destroyed by fire. With its appearance, it is one of three lighthouses that were built in this design. The “Sabine Pass Lighthouse” was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its uniqueness.
