Chicago Economy
The opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848 made shipping possible from the Great Lakes via Chicago to the Mississippi and Gulf of Mexico. Chicago became the largest trading center in the Midwest, as well as the largest railroad hub and largest inland port on earth; the city became an important production site for steel as well as a transhipment point for grain and was the location of large slaughterhouses in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century (Stockyards, closed in 1971). Chicago has been directly linked to the Atlantic Ocean by the Saint Lawrence Seaway since 1959; O’Hare Airport was first easily surpassed by Atlanta Hartfield as the busiest airport in the world in 2000. The “steel crisis” since the 1970s has affected the city’s economic situation, which together with Gary had the largest blast furnace capacity in the USA. Although there has since been a restructuring of the economy into a service center, Chicago is still a major industrial location. In addition to the construction of agricultural machinery, the electrical and electronics industry and the production of a wide range of consumer and capital goods, Chicago also has printing and publishing houses. Midwestern Agricultural Processing, Boeing Co., McDonald’s Corp., Sears Roebuck & Co., Motorola Inc. headquarters in Chicago or the surrounding area. The oldest skyscraper district and main business center “the Loop”, located behind the harbor, takes second place in the USA as a financial center behind New York’s Wall Street (Chicago Stock Exchanges). Most of the employees work in the trade and service sector; Underground since 1943.
