History
The Arkansas area was explored by the French and Spanish in the 16th and 17th centuries; In 1541 H. de Soto was the first white man to pass through it. It fell to Spain in 1763, was regained by France in 1799 and came to the USA in 1803 as part of Louisiana by purchase (“Louisiana Purchase”). Organized as a separate territory since 1819, Arkansas was admitted to the United States on June 15, 1836 as the 25th state. In the Civil War (1861-65) Arkansas joined the southern states; In 1868 it was re-admitted to the Union.
