History
The area of today’s Arizona has been explored by Spaniards (including V. de Coronado in 1540) since the 16th century; Franciscan missionaries served among the Hopi during the 17th century; Catholic missionaries established stations in southern Arizona in the early 18th century. Forays by the Apaches prevented a larger settlement of whites. After the Mexican War (1846–48), part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) was ceded to the USA, the area south of the Gila River was added in 1853 by the Gadsden Treaty. In 1863 Arizona was organized as a territory and on February 14, 1912 it became the 48th state in the USA.
