Martin Luther King
King, Martin Luther, Jr., American civil rights activist and Baptist pastor, Nobel Peace Prize laureate 1964, born January 15, 1929 in Atlanta (Georgia), † (murdered) April 4, 1968 in Memphis (Tennessee).
Campaigner for the civil rights of the African American population in the USA. King was pastor in 1954 at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery (Ala.), In 1960 with his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta; Under the influence of H. D. Thoreau and M. Gandhi, developed nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience into the effective weapon of the civil rights movement in the USA.
In 1955/56 he led the bus boycott that led to the desegregation of public transport in Montgomery and became a model for similar actions. In 1957 King became chairman of the movement for nonviolent resistance against discrimination and racial hatred “Southern Christian Leadership Conference” (SCLC) and initiated numerous demonstrations (including in Birmingham, Ala., 1963; highlight: March on Washington, DC, where he on 28.8. 1963 conveyed the vision of a free and equal society in his famous speech “I have a dream” in front of around 250,000 participants).
He was imprisoned several times. He has been assassinated on various occasions. In 1964 he received the Nobel Peace Prize as the undisputed spokesman for peaceful racial integration. From the mid-1960s, when King increasingly came into opposition to the radical wing of the Afro-American civil rights movement (Black Power), his influence waned.
He was killed by a rifleman on the balcony of a motel in Memphis in the early evening of April 4, 1968; The white man James Earl Ray (* 1928, † 1998) was sentenced as an assassin in March 1969 to 99 years in prison. Since 1986, the person and work of King have been commemorated annually on the third Monday in January (federal holiday).
