Buffalo

Buffalo [ b ʌ fələ ʊ ], city, New York, USA, at the eastern end of Lake Erie, at the outflow of the Niagara River and at the junction of New York State Barge Canal, 261,300 residents (1950: 580,100 residents);catholic bishopric; Branch of the State University of New York, colleges, art, science museum; Zoological Garden. Buffalo is an important rail junction and a main port on the St. Lawrence Seaway, a transshipment point for bulk goods; Grain mills, electrochemical and electrometallurgical industry (the power stations at Niagara Falls provide energy), steel, automotive and aircraft industries, paint and wallpaper factories, Wurlitzer factories (organs, jukeboxes). Since 1927 Buffalo has been linked to Fort Erie, Canada by the Peace Bridge; international Airport.

H. Richardson built the Buffalo State Hospital in 1870–96. The Prudential Building (formerly Guaranty Building), built by D. Adler and L. H. Sullivan in 1895/96, is an example of the early high-rise architecture of the Chicago School. In 1904 “Martin House” was built, one of F. L. Wright’s prairie houses. In 1938 Eliel Saarinen built the Kleinhaus Music Hall. With the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo has an important collection of paintings and sculptures (especially modern art).

Buffalo was founded as New Amsterdam after 1801 and was given its current name in 1810. In the 19th century, especially after the construction of the Erie Canal (1825), the city experienced a rapid economic boom (from 1832).

Rochester

Rochester [ r ɔ t ʃ ɪ stə], city, New York, USA, at the mouth of the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and the New York State Barge Canal, 215 100 residents; the metropolitan area has 1.04 million residents; Catholic and Anglican bishopric; University of Rochester (founded 1850), Rochester Institute of Technology (founded in 1829 as Rochester Athenaeum; architect E. K. Roche, 1966–69), Nazareth College of Rochester (founded 1924), planetarium, museums; Manufacture of photographic (based by Eastman Kodak Co.), optical (manufactured by Xerox Corporation) and scientific equipment, as well as mechanical engineering, food and clothing industries; main American port on Lake Ontario; international Airport.

In the former home of G. Eastman there is now a photo museum; in reconstructed houses from the 19th century a museum for the natural and cultural history of the Indians.

Named after Colonel Nathaniel Rochester (* 1752, † 1831); from 1812 under the name Rochesterville, from 1822 Rochester, became a town in 1834.

New York State Barge Canal

New York State Barge Canal [ nju ː j ɔ ː k ste ɪ t b ɑ ː d ʒ kə Nael], Barge Canal, waterway system of the State of New York, USA, the Hudson River to the Saint Lawrence River, which connects the Great Lakes and the Finger Lakes, total length 845 km, built 1905–18; Main parts of the branching off the Niagara River Erie Canal, the Champlain Canal (Lake Champlain), the Oswego Canal (between the Erie Canal near Syracuse and Lake Ontario) and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal (from the Erie Canal to the Finger Lakes).
