Geography
Connecticut is the southernmost of the New England states and stretches from Long Island Sound (Atlantic Ocean) into the foothills of the Northern Appalachian Mountains. Through the broad valley furrow of the Connecticut River, which runs from north to south, Connecticut is divided into a shallow, undulating eastern part (up to about 300 m above sea level) and a more pronounced western part (in the extreme northwest up to 725 m above sea level). The climate is temperate, the annual rainfall amounts to over 1,000 mm. Around 55% of the state’s area is forested (oak, hickory trees, birch, maple, etc.).
