Cincinnati was founded in 1788 by settlers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania as Losantiville (today’s name since 1790), and Fort Washington was built nearby in 1789. 1802 became Cincinnati Town, 1819 City. With the advent of steam shipping (after 1811), the city developed into an important river port.

Toledo

Toledo [spanish to Ledo], [tə li ː də ʊ ], port city in northwest Ohio, USA, at the mouth of the Maumee River into Lake Erie, 309 000 residents; the metropolitan area has 659,200 residents; catholic bishopric; University (founded 1872), art museum, zoological garden; Glass, motor vehicle (jeep), machine, plastics industry, petroleum refineries; Important port on the St. Lawrence Seaway with handling of bulk goods (coal, iron ore, grain, petroleum products).

Toledo emerged from the merger of two villages (Port Lawrence, founded in 1817, and Vistula, founded in 1832) and has been a city since 1837. The claims of the states of Michigan and Ohio to the area around Toledo led to a border war in 1835, which was decided in favor of Ohio through the mediation of President A. Jackson.
