Chicago

The cityscape has been shaped by representatives of the Chicago School since the late 19th century and has a large number of important examples of modern and contemporary American architecture. With the Manhattan Building by W. Le Baron Jenney, the first high-rise in steel frame construction was built in 1890. The Rookery Building (1885–88), Masonic Building (1891) and Reliance Building (1890–94) by architects D. H. Burnham and J. W. Root were groundbreaking for the further structural development of the city, as were the buildings by D. Adler and L. H. Sullivan(e.g. Auditorium Building, 1886-90; Schlesinger and Mayer Department Store, now Carson, Pirie & Scott, 1899-1904). On the other hand, the Art Institute of Chicago, which was designed for the world exhibition in 1893 and took up the form of the Italian Renaissance, is entirely committed to historicism, with its collections from antiquity to the present one of the most important museums in the USA. The Wrigley Building, one of the landmarks of Chicago, was built in 1920–24 based on plans by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. The Frederick C. Robie House, built in 1908-10 by F. L. Wright as a private house in the prairie style, is an icon of modern architecture and is now a museum. The plan for the Chicago Tribune Tower (1925) emerged from an international competition. L. Mies van der Rohe created or planned numerous structures for Chicago, including several buildings for the Illinois Institute of Technology, which were built between 1942 and 1958, the Lake Shore Drive Apartments (1948–51) and the Federal Center (1959–64, central post office with two high-rise buildings). The skyline changed continuously in the following period: Marina City (two cylindrical towers, 1963/64, by B. Goldberg); Court House (1964); R. J. Daley Center (1965-67, from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill [abbreviation SOM] et al.); John Hancock Center (1965-70, from SOM). The building of the department store group Sears, Roebuck & Co. (“Sears Tower”, from SOM, 1969-74) is one of the tallest buildings on earth (442 m). The more recent development is i.a. through buildings by J. Portman, Harry Weese (* 1915, † 1998), Stanley Tigerman (* 1930) and numerous architectural firms, such as Kohn Pederson Fox Associates (333 West Wacker Drive Building, 1983), Murphy & Jahn (State of Illinois Center, 1979–84), SOM (NBC Tower, 1986–90), Hammond, Beeby & Babka (Harald Washington Library Center, 1988-91). H. Jahn developed the plans for the State of Illinois Center (1979-84; State of Illinois Art Gallery). The Museum of Contemporary Art with a sculpture garden (1991–95) was created based on a design by J. P. Kleihues. Several large sculptures and objects (by A. Calder, P. Picasso, C. Oldenburg, T. Smith) enliven the cityscape, as well as a 23 m long mosaic (»The Four Seasons«) by M. Chagall (1974) on the forecourt of the First National Bank Building. In 2004 the “Millennium Park” (begun in 2001) was opened (including a music pavilion and a bridge designed by F. O. Gehry); he extends the French-style Grant Park (1837 following) to the north-west.
