Minneapolis [English m ɪ n ɪ æpəl ɪ s], city in Minnesota, USA, on the upper Mississippi, (2010) 383 000 residents (1950: 520 000, 2000 382 600 residents); (2010) 63.8% white and 18.6% black;the metropolitan area Minneapolis-Saint-Paul-Bloomington has 3.35 million residents; University of Minnesota (founded 1851) and other educational and cultural institutions. Minneapolis has major flour mills and is one of the leading wheat markets in the United States; the Minneapolis Corn Exchange is one of the largest on earth. There is also the electronics, food and agricultural machinery industries. Minneapolis has lively tourism due to the lake district in the area. In the city center, almost all of the newer buildings are connected by skyways (closed pedestrian bridges). There are 22 lakes and 153 parks in the urban area.

Birkerts (Federal Reserve Bank, 1967–72), E. L. Barnes (Walker Art Center, 1971; with sculpture garden, opened in 1988; extension by Herzog & de Meuron, opened in 2005), P. Johnson and J. Burgee (IDS Center, 1973), SOM (First National Bank, 1981; Pillsbury Center Building, 1981; Lutheran Brotherhood Building, 1981), McKim, Mead and White (Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1914; extension ofK. Tange, 1974) and F. O. Gehry (Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, University of Minnesota, 1993).
Around the Fort Snelling, built in 1819/20 on the left bank of the Mississippi, the settlement of Saint Anthony developed from 1838 onwards. In 1855 the settlement of Minneapolis (in the language of the Dakota minne “water”) was founded. In 1872 both places were merged.
