The University of Alabama–Birmingham Department of Biology has been a leader in the field of biology for decades. Founded in 1969, the department has grown to become one of the top research-based departments in the country. The department offers a wide range of research and educational opportunities, with a focus on interdisciplinary research. Over the years, UAB has established itself as a leader in molecular and cellular biology, genomics, systems biology, ecology and evolutionary biology. Research conducted at UAB has led to advances in medical treatments and disease prevention as well as understanding how species interact with their environment. The department also offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in various areas of biology including biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and cell/molecular biology. In addition to its research activities, UAB is also home to several academic centers such as the Center for Bioinformatics & Computational Biology (CBCB) and Center for Environmental Genomics (CEG). The Department of Biological Sciences at Auburn University has a long and illustrious history. Founded in 1872, the department was originally known as the Department of Natural Sciences and was part of the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts. The department offered courses in botany, zoology, entomology, and physiology. In 1892, the department was renamed to its current name as part of a reorganization effort by the college. During this time, courses in bacteriology were added to the curriculum as well as courses related to forestry and wildlife conservation. The department continued to grow over the years, adding additional faculty members and expanding its course offerings. In 1924 a new building was constructed for the department that included research laboratories for faculty members. This building stood until it was replaced by another one in 1972 which still stands today and houses most of the department’s activities. Over time, more specialized fields were added to the curriculum such as genetics, ecology, evolutionary biology, cellular biology and biochemistry. Today, students can choose from a wide array of courses offered by the Department of Biological Sciences at Auburn University that prepare them for careers in many areas such as medicine, public health or environmental science.

Huntsville

Decatur
Decatur is a charming small town in Morgan County that is rich in history and nature. It is also known as “River City”, “Heart of the Valley” or “Chicago of the South”. It owes the name “River City” above all to its impressive location on the banks of the Wheeler Lakes and the Tennessee River. The largest city in Morgan County was founded in 1820. In the past, it was one of the main economic centers due to its close proximity to the water. Decatur has the largest Victorian-era neighborhood in the state. Also located here is Alabama’s oldest opera house, the “Cotaco Opera House”. Decatur is often called “Ballooning Capital of Alabama” (Alabama’s balloon capital) because the Alabama Jubilee, one of the oldest hot air balloon races, has been taking place here since 1977. Other attractions include the championship golf course, the water park in Mallard Park and Wheeler Lake with the “Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge”.
