Start in the vibrant and contrasting capital Kuala Lumpur where modern architecture mixes with old traditions and culture. On to Borneo with Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center as the first stop. From Sandakan you take a boat up the river towards Sukau’s rainforest. The journey ends on the beautiful island of Gaya Island off Kota Kinabalu. You can look forward to azure waters, beautiful beaches and a fabulous marine life, which can be experienced through diving and snorkeling.
Day 1: Departure from SwedenDay 2: Arrival in Kuala Lumpur
Upon arrival in Kuala Lumpur, you will be picked up at the airport and driven to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your own disposal.
Day 3: Kuala Lumpur – city tour by public transport
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be picked up by your guide. You walk with the guide to the nearest train station, about 10-15 minutes from here. On the trip, you have some freedom to design the excursion together with your guide. Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of religions, peoples and traditions, which is evident from the diversity of the city’s different districts. Islamic and modern architecture, Indian temples and Bollywood posters fill the street scene in Little India – not to mention the Chinese culture in China Town. You will have a colorful experience today. Later in the afternoon, return to the hotel and spend the rest of the day on your own. ( F )
Day 4: Kuala Lumpur – Sandakan
Today you will be picked up at your hotel and transported to the airport. From here you fly to the state of Sabah in the northeastern part of Malaysian Borneo. On arrival at Sandakan you will be transported to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your own disposal. ( F )
Day 5: Sandakan – Sepiloks orangutan center – Sukaus rainforest
Today it is off to Sepilok’s orangutan center, 25 kilometers from Sandakan. The place is world famous for its great efforts to protect and reintegrate the orangutans to nature. Your visit begins with a video of the orangutans on Borneo. Then explore the jungle at the center and see orangutans. The visit ends at the orangutans’ “kindergarten”, which is a closed area for the youngest monkeys. From here you continue to the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Center, where you will hear and see how this center helps and protects the world’s smallest bear species that lives on Borneo. After lunch, travel by road to Abai Jungle Lodge and arrive late in the afternoon. After arrival and check-in, take a riverboat ride in the jungle. At noon you can look forward to a candlelit dinner overlooking the river. After the meal, your guide will tell you about the flora and fauna in the area, while you will see pictures. This overview is interesting because your new knowledge means that you get more out of the visits in the rainforest. (F , L , M )
Day 6: Sukaus rainforest
This fantastic day begins with a wonderful boat trip up the Kinabatangan River and up to Lake Pita’s Oxbow. Here you can watch animals and birds in the early morning sun while the jungle wakes up. After a couple of hours on the river, you return to the resort and have breakfast. Then an exciting and educational walk awaits with one of the facility’s nature experts. After lunch you do a river safari in the rainforest and with a little luck you see both wild orangutans and the strange nose monkeys. ( F , L , M )
Day 7: Sukaus rainforest – Sandankan
After breakfast you go back along the country roads towards Sandakan and after lunch the flight departs for Kota Kinabalu. On arrival there is a transfer to your hotel. ( F )
Day 8: Kota Kinabalu – Gaya Island
You will be picked up at the hotel and driven down to the port where you take a boat to Gaya island and after check in you have the rest of the day on your own. ( F )
Day 9-10: Gaya Island
The days spent on your own are successfully spent enjoying the island’s beautiful beaches and exotic nature, or below the water surface, where you can admire the marine life of the tropics. Diving can be booked locally or from home. Diving and equipment are not included in the price. ( F )
Day 11: Gaya Island – Sweden
You take the boat back to Kota Kinabalu and on to the city airport. Depending on the departure time, there may be some waiting time at the airport or in the city. ( F )
