Maine [me ɪ n], abbreviation Me., Post office ME, state in the northeast of the USA, on the border with Canada, with 79,924 km 2 the largest of the New England states, (2015) 1.33 million residents (1960: 696 300, 1980: 1.12 million, 2000: 1.27 million residents). Geography

The climate in the coastal area is relatively mild and balanced, in the interior it is determined by strong seasonal contrasts; the amount of precipitation is 1,000 mm per year. 80% of the state area is forested.

In 2014, 95.0% of the population were white, 1.4% black, and others 3.2%. The largest city is Portland.
