Natchez Trace
The “Natchez Trace”, also known as “Devil’s Backbone”, is a trade route used by the Chickasaw, Choctaw and Cherokee Indian tribes. The trail that runs from Natchez to Nashville is believed to be more than 8,000 years old and 714 km long. Unfortunately, the original path no longer exists today, but the newly created “Natchez Trace Parkway” is identical to its predecessor.
Old Mississippi State Capitol
The “Old Mississippi State Capitol”, also known as the “Old Capitol Museum” or “Old State Capitol”, is located in Jackson. It was built in the Greek Revival style in 1839 and was the seat of Parliament for many years. Today the former parliament building served as a museum and is called the “State Historical Museum”. In this free museum, visitors learn all about the history of Mississippi and of course about the building itself. The “Old State Capitol” has been declared a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Rowan Oak
“Rowan Oak” was the residence of the famous American William Faulkner for more than 30 years, which is why “Rowan Oak” is also known as the “William Faulkner House”. The house was built in the Greek Revival style in 1844 and is framed by many trees. Today the house serves as a historical house museum, which you can explore on your own or during a guided tour. The “William Faulkner House” was designated a Mississippi Landmark and National Historic Landmark and was included in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Birthplace of Elvis Presley
Tupelo is the birthplace of the world-famous rock’n’roll legend Elvis Presley. Here in this charming town, Presley was born in 1935 and lived in Tupelo for 13 years. That the residents of Tupelo are proud of their honorary citizen is unmistakable, which is why the “Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum” was built.
