History

After the discovery of the area originally inhabited by Indians (Abenaki) by S. de Champlain (1609), the French founded the first permanent European settlement on the Isle la Motte (1666); Dutch and British settlements (Fort Dummer) emerged in 1724. Long controversial between France and Great Britain, the area came into British possession in 1763. In Vermont, on which New York and New Hampshire property claims were raised, settlers formed in 1770 the striving for independence of the territory, by Ethan Allen (* 1738, † 1789)led patriotic militia of the “Green Mountain Boys”. In 1777 Vermont was constituted as an independent state, initially under the name New Connecticut; its constitution was the first of the American constitutions to prohibit slavery and provide universal suffrage for men. After New York and New Hampshire had given up, Vermont was admitted to the Union on March 4, 1791 as the 14th state. In the 1830s and after the Civil War, many farmers migrated from their small holdings south and west; however, the rural character was retained.
