History

The coast of North Carolina was discovered in 1524 by the Florentine navigator Giovanni da Verrazano (* 1485 ?, † 1528?). Sir W. Raleigh’s first attempts at colonization (1585/87) failed. Settled from Virginia after 1653, the area was conquered by King Charles II of England in 1663 .transferred to eight owners. In 1689 North Carolina (under this name since 1691) and South Carolina were divided, and in 1729 North Carolina became a crown colony. In the 18th century, a sharp contrast developed between the east of the colony, where wealthy plantation owners used slaves to grow tobacco and rice, and the western hinterland, where small farmers predominated. North Carolina was the first of the British colonies to vote for independence on May 12, 1776 and passed its first constitution on November 12, 1776. The American Federal Constitution ratified North Carolina on November 21, 1789 as the 12th of the founding states. Before the Civil War, North Carolina only joined the Confederation after all attempts at mediation had failed.

Oconaluf tea

“Oconaluftee” is the name of a river valley in the Great Smokey Mountains in southeast North Carolina. Once upon a time, Indians from the Cherokee and Appalachian tribes lived here, but today the Great Smokey Mountains National Park is located here. The main attractions of this park are the “Mingus Mill” and the “Mountain Farm Museum”. The “Mingus Mill” dates back to 1886 and was owned by John Mingus. The “Mountain Farm Museum” consists of several individual small buildings and shows how typical life on a mountain farm was in the past. These include, for example, a forge, the “Enloe Barn” and the “John Davis Cabin”. Another attraction in the “Oconaluftee Park” is the ”

Old Baldy Lighthouse & Smith Island Museum of History

Bald Head Lighthouse, also known as Old Baldy, is the oldest surviving lighthouse in North Carolina. The octagonal lighthouse was built from bricks in 1817. His first lighthouse keeper was Sedgewick Springs, who also owned the nearby Sedgeley Abby Plantation. The lighthouse has been restored in recent years and is open to the public. The Smith Island Museum of History is also located on the premises. The museum is located in a replica of an original lighthouse keeper’s house that dates back to the 1850’s. The house is furnished with original furnishings, lighthouse artifacts and shows exhibitions on the history of “Old Baldy” and the island.

Old Salem Museums & Gardens

The “Old Salem” open-air museum is located in the town of Winston-Salem in the “Old Salem Historic District” of the Moravian settlement of the same name. The so-called “Moravians” who belonged to a Protestant community once lived here. The fact that “Old Salem” is so unique may be due to the fact that more than 70% of the buildings in the historic district are still in their original condition and are now a huge open-air museum. This shows life in the 18th and 19th centuries in a very interesting way. You can find a carpentry, a blacksmith’s shop, a shoemaker’s shop and a bakery here. Another attraction is the “Salem Tavern”, but the “Single Brothers House” and the “Winkler Bakery” are also worth mentioning.
